Arcis
Officially Celebrates its 10th Anniversary Today, Sept 12th
Ten Years and Counting - Thank You!
By Brad Torry
September 12, 2006 marks ten years to the day when the
numbered company (ARCIS) was formed and our adventure began.
Our vision at the time was to create an integrated
geophysical services company focused on technical excellence
and superior service. Having reached our first decade as a
company we reflect on the obstacles we bridged, the
successes and the failures; but above all, the people we have
assembled as our staff and the people we have had the
opportunity to work with as clients. From our early years as
a public company and surviving $10 oil in 1999, to the privatization of the company
in 2003/04, and through to today, two items carry the torch that remains lit,
our vision and our values. Read More...
Survey Says?
Know Your Grid System & Software to Ensure you Know Where
your Wells Are. A Practical Understanding of Survey Related
Issues.
By Brad
Torry and Mark Watson
Considerable dialogue and debate has taken place in recent
years surrounding the issue of geodetic datum use in Western
Canada (i.e. NAD 83 vs. NAD 27). The issue first came to
light in 1990 when Jake Epp (Federal Energy Mines and
Resource Minister) adopted the North American Datum of 1983
(NAD 83) for all Federal lands. The result of this decision
has slowly imparted itself on provincial agencies to look
towards converting historical data (i.e. topo maps etc.) to
this same reference datum.

Benefiting from 3D AVO by Using Adaptive Supergathers
By Yong Xu
3D surface seismic data has many useful features that include fine sampling, better resolution,
better and accurate visualization and volume interpretation of structural and stratigraphic features.
All these help in providing a vivid picture of the geologic features in the subsurface.
These characteristic qualities of 3D seismic data, coupled with the fact that 3D prestack
time or depth migration yield accurate imaging of subsurface features, represent sufficient
ground and reason to expect AVO analysis to be carried out on 3D data.

Arcis and Geo-Texture have formed a strategic alliance to offer
volumetric curvature and other seismic geometric attribute analysis. Volumetric
curvature attribute analysis is the leading edge technology in the field of
seismic attributes for identifying subtle faults at or below the limits of
seismic resolution, illuminating fractures associated with folds and flexures, and
for making accurate interpretation of stratigraphic features.
- OXY Libya, LLC recently awarded Arcis a contract to process 2D data from
the Sirte Basin, Libya. The project will consist of the
reprocessing of vintage data as well as the processing of
data currently being acquired by OXY Libya, LLC. It is
anticipated that this project will continue into 2007.
- The onshore division of Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) of Houston recently awarded two
large, high-density, 3D processing projects to Arcis. The
two projects include the processing of the newly acquired
Cambridge 3D (220 square miles) and the 3D merge of eight
3Ds (928 square miles) in Oklahoma. This is a significant
technical win for Arcis and may be the largest land 3D
dataset to be processed in Calgary. As part of Arcis'
commitment to PGS, Arcis has added 454 compute nodes
to bring the CPU total to nearly 1,000 compute nodes in its Calgary office.
- Explor Data Ltd and Arcis have entered into an agreement to reprocess
Explor's 2D structural data as part of an ongoing project to improve the quality
and consistency of their entire 2D data library. The library
consists of over 17,000 km of high quality regional 2D data
within the AB/BC Foothills, North West Territories, Montana and North Dakota.
Arcis has the innovative tools and experienced personnel
capable of reprocessing complex, structural seismic data. The
project was awarded based on the quality of the test line and as of August 2006, Arcis has
processed over 50,000 records. It is anticipated that the project will continue
throughout 2006 and into 2007.
We hope you enjoyed the second issue of Seismic Matters. If you have
